I am very pleased to submit to you a manuscript entitled “Mechanism and descriptors of coke formation during the hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil: Insights from density functional theory” for publication in ACS Catalysis.
The manuscript addresses rate-limiting elementary reactions and descriptors of coke formation in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), in terms of representative elementary reactions routes and the thermogravimetric value of catalyst coke. (生物油)HDO is a promising method to reduce the content of those oxygenated molecules to improve the quality of bio-oil. However, the coke formation during the process of HDO has severely limited the large-scale application. Due to the difficulty of anti-coking catalyst design and screening in HDO of bio-oil, the development process of catalysts suitable for production has encountered a bottleneck. The rate-limiting elementary reaction can help to deepen the understanding of essential reaction types during the entire process, initially reducing the dimension of reaction research. And the descriptor of catalyst inherent properties can make it possible to design and screening catalysts by using machine learning. Therefore, the present manuscript devotes to unveil rate-limiting elementary reactions and descriptors of coke formation during HDO of bio-oil, under the insight of density functional theory calculations.
The representative elementary reactions routes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), produced during bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation catalyst coke formation, were performed on the Pt-Pd (111) surface. Then, descriptors study in Pt (111), Pd (111), Rh (111), Pt-Pd (111), Rh-Pt (111), and Rh-Pd (111), based on the TG of noble metal-based catalysts reported in the references, has been performed, taking the energy barrier of the C-H(sp2) bond cleavage on the benzene ring as the link. Finally, we calculated the energy barrier of the rate-limiting elementary reaction under the effect of different free radicals, to explore the applicability of the rate-limiting reaction and descriptor under the action of free radicals. Three significant outcomes of the analysis are (ⅰ) the rate-limiting elementary reaction of the C-H(sp2) bond cleavage on the benzene ring (ⅱ) the descriptors of d-band center energy and the surface atomic spacing (ⅲ) great applicability of rate-limiting reaction and descriptor under the effect of free radicals.
