To come upon the isle of Berk is like discovering a monutainous forest in the middle of the ocean.Huge rocky peaks jut out from the sea and reach into the rich blue of the sky,with a lush,green oasis nestled between the precipices. At its con-ception,Art Director Pierre-Olivier Vincent envisioned a mountain so high as to triple the height of Hawaii's Mauna Kea, and although scale is not pushed to quite that level in the final version,the island still makes an impressive statement."It features landscapes that are made of stylized shapes to bring whimsy to the environment,but are treated with realistic lighting and surfacing to give a sense of tangible space.We all felt that Berk should be a place youwould want to visit,"says Production Designer Kathy Altieri.

? ?The crescent-shaped tip of the island is actually the only portion of Berk that has been fully modeled,"Every time you see Berk outside of the village,it's done by matte painting.They've created trees,rocks, distant snow,grass,and other amazing touches that do a great job giving scale and detail to the island,"notes Visual Effects Supervisor Craig Ring.
