Finally, the wait was over: on the DTM’s two official test days, teams and drivers were up against each other for the first time this season. At the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, many miles were racked up as an important element in preparation. Even though snow shortened the action on Wednesday, the drivers showed their huge anticipation for the 2021 racing season by covering a total distance of 13,200 kilometres.

“It is incredibly great fun,” said a delighted Sophia Fl?rsch who got her first mileage with the Audi R8 LMS of the ABT Sportsline team that she will be racing in her maiden DTM season. Getting used to the car, the set-up, the new Michelin tyres, the procedures and, for some, also the track were the essential activities across the two days of testing.

During the afternoon of the opening test day, the Grand Prix circuit in the Hardtwald forest near Hockenheim showed itself in a rather unusual wintry fashion: there was even snow, allowing only for comparatively little running after the lunch break. When the snow intensified, the action even stopped altogether. Otherwise, teams and drivers had good conditions, particularly on the second day, so that, all in all, many laps could be completed after all.

In total, 19 drivers were out on track with 15 GT3 cars from ten teams. The most prolific driver on the opening day was Maximilian G?tz, who raced up 85 laps with the Mercedes-AMG GT3 run by Mercedes-AMG Team HRT. On the second day of testing, two-time champion Marco Wittmann covered the longest distance at 159 laps with the Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M6 GT3. In the addition of the two days, Wittmann was also the busiest driver with 241 laps, followed by Dev Gore (Audi, Team Rosberg, 185 laps), Sophia Fl?rsch (Audi, ABT Sportsline, 183 laps), Alex Albon (Ferrari, Red Bull Alpha Tauri AF Corse, 153 laps), Vincent Abril (Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-AMG Team HRT, 147 laps), Arjun Maini (Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed, 144 laps) and Liam Lawson (Ferrari, Red Bull Alpha Tauri AF Corse, 143 laps).

From the DTM Trophy, six drivers were in action with five BMW M4s. Between them, Theo Oeverhaus was the most prolific driver, racking up 132 laps over the two days with the Walkenorst team’s BMW. Philipp Stahlschmidt was busy, too: he completed 123 laps with the BMW M4 run by Hofor Racing by Bonk Motorsport.

In the addition of DTM and DTM Trophy, 2,886 laps of the 4.574 kilometres long Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg were completed in the course of the two test days, a total distance of 13,200.564 kilometres. Testing continues at the beginning of May: the second official test for DTM and DTM Trophy will be held at DEKRA Lausitzring from 4-6 May.
