回顧問題不定期更新 Study Questions are Made by Prof. Cruz & Prof. Moore from Oberlin College & Conservatory?

Lectures 16: Plant Body Plan & Meristems

Lectures 17: Secondary Growth

1. A) If the tip of the stem were excised (cut off) on a plant with several leaves, would the plant survive? Why or why not? B) If the tip of the stem of a seedling that has not yet developed leaves were excised, would the plant survive? Why or why not?

2. Why don’t roots produce root hairs in the zone of cell division or zone of elongation?

3. Imagine that we have isolated an amazing chemical compound that prevents changes in gene expression in plant cells. If we applied this compound to the SAM of a growing plant, what would happen to the cells produced by that SAM? If we applied this compound to a fully matured leaf, what would happen to the cells in that stem? Explain your answers in both cases.

4. When root cells elongate, why are proton pumps necessary? Why do you think it is important for root cells to elongate only in one direction?

5. When a baby whale is born, can we precisely predict the number of internal organs that baby will have when it is an adult? When a seedling of an oak tree germinates, can we precisely predict the number of leaves that seedling will have when reaching maturity? In both cases, briefly explain why or why not.

6. Why does it make sense that new branch roots arise from the pericycle, rather than from the cortex or epidermis?

7. What did every single branch on a tree (except the main trunk) begin as?

8. How is a plant cell like a Slinky?

9. If you were to make a cut several inches deep all the way around the trunk of a large tree (in other words, not cutting the tree down, but simply cutting into it), would the tree survive? Explain why or why not.

10. As trees age, the wood at the center of the stem eventually begins to rot (and many old trees have hollow insides at the base of the trunk as a result). How can an old tree survive with its central wood rotted?

11. Why do trees exhibit growth rings in secondary xylem but not in secondary phloem?

12. If the bark of cork oak can be shaved only to regrow later, at what layer of bark tissue do you think the cut is made at? At the vascular cambium, secondary phloem, cork cambium, or cork? Explain your answer.
