Unit 1 ??Never, Never give up

?Britain’s great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, worked his way up despite he was not a good student during childhood. He attributed?his success to the determination ,thus making the famous short and clear-cut speech:”Young men, never give up. Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never, never!”

Personal history, educational opportunity, individual dilemmas ----none of these can inhibit ?a strong spirit committed to success. Take Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and Abraham Lincoln as an example. All of them had survived?immense obstacles, however,it’s?their strong will, optimism, dedication and determination that enabled them to triumph over the overwhelming failures and profound difficulties in their lives.

Many artists, statesmen, writers and inventors achieved prosperity because they possessed a committed will to keep preparing and working and a passion to succeed, which is demonstrated by the example of Sandra Day O’Connor.

It’s sad that many people do not spare efforts to achieve their goals out of the threat of failure. We should realize that the secret of success is based upon a burning inward desire that fuels the determination to act, to keep preparing, to keep going even when we are tired and fail. ?With hard work, determination, dedication and preparation, you can transcend any handicap, accomplish any feat, and achieve success!

Unit 2??Swimming Through Fear

On a tour of France, I saw the Mediterranean Sea,?however ,nothing scared me as much as water due to the experience of last summer where I was blacked out after hitting the water with an incredible impact. And since then, the fear wouldn’t recede.

When I saw a boy drowning amid the waves, I was in a fierce mental?struggle whether I should save him due to the horror?of water. The desperate situation left no time for me and I decided to intervene. As soon as I hit the water ,the symptoms of fear reappeared making me stop short. However,I was the only one able to reach the drowning boy with the conviction that no one was plowing through the water toward the boy.

Taking a deep breath,I threw myself into the water and managed to reach?the boy,?but when I swam back toward shore, the rip current was forcibly dragging us out to sea. With what I learned before ,I slowly made?our?way to safety, thus conquering my inner fear of water as well.

That experience helped me out of the terrible fear of water that had gripped me for so long, and from then on ,I was in a position to appreciate the beauty of water freely and peacefully.

Unit 3???Audrey Hepburn - A true angel in this world

Audrey Hepburn?thrilled audiences with her fantastic?acting in many noteworthy?films. Despite her success in the film domain, she preferred playing the roles of an exemplary mother and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador?most.

Audrey Hepburn suffered a lot as a young girl during the wartime. Although afflicted by the desperate reality of her young life, she refused to give up and transcended those challenges.

After the war, she immigrated to London, and worked her way up to transform to?an internationally famous movie star.,receiving countless awards and compliments .In spite of these, she?remained?her?generous?and compassionate character and attached great importance to humanitarian work.?In 1988, Audrey took?the role as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in which she found her lifelong passion. She traveled to the most difficult places around the world to offer help and raise?awareness of wars and droughts.

?In 1992, Audrey was stricken by cancer and returned home with her family. But she remained a gracious?woman till the end of her life?with her passion for service enduring.

?????From Audrey’s words, we can see the majesty of her spirit of social responsibility and dedication.

Unit 4??The Surprising purpose of travel

From an imaginary travel experience,we can see that travel is burdensome and sometimes even unpleasant; then what is the?reason?to?travel? Because we need to?and?we want to.

Owing to the fact that most travel is optional, most people travel for the sake of relaxation, but their mind tends to solve the stubborn domestic issues during the trip. Therefore, what is the real purpose of travel? Travelling to a new place can make us less controlled by cognitive chains?that imprison us. As a result, we can better combine the new with the old?during which?the mundane is grasped from a slightly more abstract perspective.

To seasoned travelers, multicultural contrast means that they are open to ambiguity and willing to see the world in different ways, which in turn allows them?to expand the circumferences of their“cognitive inputs”as they refuse to settle for their first answers and initial guesses. It is undoubtedly that mental flexibility is a side effect of difference and we are reminded of what we don’t know, making us?more open-minded and less insular.

?We travel because we need to , because distance and difference are the cornerstones of creativity. Travel will change our mind to some extent, which in turn can have effects on everything in our life.

Unit 5 ??Will you be a worker or a laborer?

It’s necessary to?differentiate among work, labor, and play.?Labor is the polar opposite of play while between labor and play stands work.?????????????????

????There are three major differences between workers and laborers. Firstly, they hold different?attitudes?toward their work. Workers will dedicate more time to working and spend less time on leisure, whereas laborers?regard leisure as autonomy from compulsion ,assuming that?the more hours they have free for play, the better. Secondly, workers and laborers differ in the amount of satisfaction?they derive from their jobs. Workers will achieve greater happiness than laborers, who find it wasteful to spend time on the daily grind which brings no more happiness . Thirdly, in modern times, they?spend their leisure time in different ways. While social development has created much more leisure time than ever before, modern laborers tend to?foster?bad habits. Considering this phenomenon, lifelong learning can make the difference between being bored, unhappy laborers and workers who find meaning and joy in their employment and life. Moreover, workers, unlike laborers, hurl their passion into their work, be it physical or mental.

????Everyone has to find a job and earn a living, and that whatever job you choose, you must contend with this essential question: Will you be a laborer or a worker?
