1?Job description

Would you like to work in the field of Cognitive AI? We are looking for a PhD candidate to join our research project entitled “Learning to solve analogies: Why do children excel where AI models fail?”, funded by NWO. This project is led by dr. Claire Stevenson (PI) and dr. Han van der Maas (promoter).

The public summary of the project is as follows. Body is to feet as tree is to …? Children become capable of solving such analogies around four-to-five years of age (answer: roots). Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems, like young children, often provide less optimal answers such as “l(fā)eaves”. Analogical reasoning lies at the heart of human intelligence. Why can't AI systems reason by analogy as well as children do? This project examines how children learn to solve analogies that challenge AI, generating insights to create more robust and trustworthy AI-systems, while providing key insights into human intelligence and how it develops.

This project has three objectives:

  • Examine how and why children shift from associative reasoning to successful analogy solving.

  • Evaluate analogical reasoning ability in a selection of AI deep learning models and trace how it develops.

  • Compare children’s and AI deep learning models’ development to understand when and why their analogical reasoning abilities diverge.

2 What are you going to do

The PhD student is responsible for helping achieve these three objectives in the visual and/or verbal analogical reasoning domain. They will collaborate with the supervisors, a post doc and international colleagues.

The research tasks will include data collection with children (in person and online with Prowise Learn), creating and/or adapting deep learning analogy and abstract reasoning solvers, behavioral experiments with deep learning models, psychometric evaluations of analogy tasks, complex statistical analyses including longitudinal data analysis (e.g., latent change score models) and comparing human and AI analogy solving performance and development.

Teaching is limited to 5% of the contracted hours, by assisting in courses and supervising (bachelor) thesis students.

3 Your?experience and profile

  • A master's degree with specialization in cognitive science, psychology, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline.

  • Experience coding in R and Python (or related computer programming languages).

  • Excellent written and spoken command of English.

  • Excellent written and spoken command of Dutch or a willingness to learn Dutch.

楊屹老師來(lái)自香港城市大學(xué)生物統(tǒng)計(jì)系與數(shù)據(jù)科學(xué)學(xué)院,現(xiàn)招收1名2024年春季入學(xué)的博士生。楊老師本科畢業(yè)于浙江大學(xué)竺可楨學(xué)院,并于明尼蘇達(dá)大學(xué)獲得博士學(xué)位,隨后于哥倫比亞大學(xué)生物統(tǒng)計(jì)系任職博士后研究員。他于2022年加入香港城市大學(xué)擔(dān)任助理教授,首年即獲得香港研究資助局的杰出青年學(xué)者計(jì)劃(Early Career Scheme,ECS)。他的研究興趣主要為統(tǒng)計(jì)遺傳學(xué),目前的研究重點(diǎn)為高維數(shù)據(jù)中的變量選擇方法,并應(yīng)用于人類基因組數(shù)據(jù)以尋找致病的遺傳變異點(diǎn)位。他的研究主要發(fā)表于American Journal of Human Genetics等期刊。

Bioinformatician Single Cell Analysis and Spatial Transcriptomics

1 Project

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is a joint core facility of the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich that applies the latest omics technologies for biomolecular research and personalized medicine. The FGCZ Genome Informatics group supports researchers with the analysis and interpretation of large-scale datasets, in particular next generation sequencing (NGS) data. The team covers raw data processing, high-performance computing, statistical evaluation, interpretation, and integrated analysis. The team runs an excellent open source based software environment and establishes state-of-the-art data analysis concepts and algorithms.

You will extend the existing team and closely collaborate with researchers at ETH Zurich and University of Zurich. The main responsibilities will be the reproducible analysis, visualisation and interpretation of multi-omics datasets with a focus on single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics. You will use and extend existing analysis workflows. Additionally, you will advise researchers of ETH Zurich and University of Zurich on experimental design and data analysis strategies.

  • PhD degree in bioinformatics or a related field

  • proficient in NGS data analysis with very good scripting skills

  • good understanding of biological research questions

  • highly communicative, team-oriented

  • enthusiastic about statistical and bioinformatics data analysis

  • service-oriented and ready to keep up with the constant developments in the field

  • advanced knowledge of English

  • working experience with GNU/Linux operating system

  • in depth knowledge of R/Bioconductor and/or python
