簡介：

Cristina Milesi為美國Montana大學(xué)生態(tài)建模與遙感專業(yè)博士，加州CropSnap公司創(chuàng)始人， “科研圈內(nèi)人”跨國學(xué)術(shù)服務(wù)平臺聯(lián)合創(chuàng)始人，兼熊貓編輯網(wǎng)Panda Edit Network(PEN)首席英文編輯。她多年前曾擔任NASA高級科學(xué)家，在 PNAS、RSE等頂級期刊發(fā)表了數(shù)十篇高水平學(xué)術(shù)論文，引用次數(shù)為3652。她致力于利用地球空間大數(shù)據(jù)與超算平臺，研究農(nóng)業(yè)變化對糧食與水資源系統(tǒng)的影響、全球城市化監(jiān)測、氣候變化與人類適應(yīng)。在報告的第一部分中(30 min)，Milesi博士將講述城市化及夜光遙感與人類活動的關(guān)聯(lián)，包括人類健康與睡眠節(jié)律。在報告的第二部分中(15 min)，Milesi博士還將對最新版的“科研圈內(nèi)人”進行一個發(fā)布介紹，講述她擔任熊貓編輯網(wǎng)首席編輯兩年以來，積累的地學(xué)學(xué)術(shù)論文常見語法錯誤與寫作經(jīng)驗總結(jié)。她還將提供如何更有效敘述研究故事的實用建議。這不僅讓專業(yè)學(xué)術(shù)論文能被更好的理解以進入同行評議，也有利于獲得更廣泛的閱讀受眾，從而被更高的引用。希望對論文英文表達以及出國交流有需求的研究人員對“科研圈內(nèi)人”這一平臺多多支持http://www.insiderofscience.com/。

Bio：

Dr. Cristina Milesi is currently owner of CropSnap LLC, Sunnyvale, CA, research director at Niruthi Climate and Ecosystem Services, Hyderabad, India, and chief editor of Panda Edit Network. She also teaches Digital Image Processing and Remote Sensing at Foothill College.

Prior to joining the private sector, she was a senior research scientist with NASA Ames Research Center. During her tenure at NASA, Dr. Milesi worked and published on the effects of agricultural change on the food and water systems, on monitoring global urbanization and its impacts with satellite data, on climate change and human adaptation, and on the use of collaborative supercomputing platforms for scientific collaboration, knowledge sharing and research.

In the second part, Dr. Milesi will present some principles of effective scientific writing practiced at Panda Edit Network, an innovative English language editing service where she is the chief editor. She will provide practical tips to communicate research ideas in a way that not only make a research article more likely to pass peer-review in technical journals but also read by a wider audience and thus cited more often.

Presentation Abstract

Urbanization has profound effects not only on the ecology, biophysical processes and climate of the earth but also on human health and quality of life. ?In the first part of this presentation, Dr. Milesi will discuss the role of remote sensing in epidemiological studies, with an example application in understanding the effects of outdoor nighttime lights on the sleep habits and sleep quality of the American general population. ?Artificial lights, both outdoors and indoors, are increasingly affecting our sleep habits. With electric lights human populations have modified the spectrum, the intensity and timing of their light exposure. In this presentation she will review the role of light as an environmental factor and examine the consequences of exposure to artificial outdoor nighttime lights on the sleep quality/quantity, sleep habits and sleep disorders of the American general population, including the daytime functioning. The study will be put in the context of available remote sensing data and opportunities for improved sensors will be discussed.
