I made a pact with my roommate Rob that he’d give his girl Polly in exchange for my jacket.Polly had suitable conditions to be my girlfriend which would help me edge past the interview of the elite law firms I applied to. ?

To make her well-spoken,I decided to teach her some logic knowledge.We spent five nights under a big oak tree and diligently talked about four well known fallacies: Dicto Simpliciter,Hasty Generalization,Ad Misericordiam and False Analogy. She enjoyed the learning very much and finally became a logician and analytical thinker.

A s a result,I thought it is time to change our relationship from academic into romantic. So the next time when we date,instead of discussing fallacies,I expressed my love to her. To my surprise, she refused me directly and pointed out my fallacies with what she had just learned from me.I changed the tactics but the result was the same.I became very angry and demanded an answer.In the end ,Polly told me the truth that indeed she liked Rob in leather and the reason of dating with me was just for my jacket.

Unit 2 Text A ??The confusing pursuit of beauty

If you were a man and had to answer the question from a woman about how she looks,the best technique and the easiest way out for you is to make an honest yet sensitive response and excuse yourself as soon as possible.It is impossible to come up with the right answer.

Men and women do not think of their looks in the same way.

Most men form an opinion of themselves at a young age then stick to it and never change his opinion.They are not arrogant about their looks as well and tend to think of themselves as average-looking.

Women always think that their appearance are not good enough or deficient.The reason is from many complex psychological and societal factors.During growing ,women think that that they need to look like beautiful dolls or models on magazines,which for most women is impossible.At this time,the beauty industry shows up to keep their self-esteem.

Women's obsession with appearance is not a reaction to pressure from men who would take no notice of extra details like fingernails or pink polish.Women are actually opening themselves up to the scrutiny of other women,the only ones qualified to judge them.

Unit?3Text A ???Fred Smith and FedEx

Frederick W. Smith is the founder,president,chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the FedEx Corp.--the largest and most successful overnight delivery service in the world.He was recognized as an outstanding entrepreneur and was held in high regard by his competitors ,employees and stockholders.He attributes his success simply to leadership.

Though he was born into a wealthy family,he suffered from his dad’s loss and a disease when he was young.He had a passion of flying and helped revive the Yale Flying club when he was at Yale University.During this time,he drafted a prototype for a transportation company but no one believed him.After graduation,he joined the Marines and completed two tours in Vietnam where he recognized the importance of leadership.

Then he went home and tried to start his own business,in 1971 the Federal Express was formed.At the beginning,his business suffered from extreme frugality and financial losses but he still showed concern for the welfare of his employees.After that terrible times,FedEx finally made it.

Smith thinks that success in business boils down to three things:appealing product or service,an efficient management system and leadership.He also developed his own philosophy:People,Service,Profit.

Unit?4Text A ??Achieving sustainable environmentalism

Environmental sensitivity is highly required now.However, there are a lot of conflicting proposals,regulations and laws concerning environment.To segregate the best options ,first you need to differentiate between environmental luxuries and environmental necessities.

A sane environmentalism openly declares that nature is here to serve human beings,which is entirely a human focused regime.Its counterpart indulges in overt earth worship,being nothing more than sentimental.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too.In the standoff of the welfare of caribou versus reducing an oil reliance that gets people killed in wars,I choose people over caribou every time.Sometimes aesthetic aspects of life have to be sacrificed to more fundamental ones.We can’t afford to preserve the spotted owl at the cost of the livelihood of people.

It’s important to differentiate between those environmental goods that are fundamental and those are not.Nature is our ward,not our master.When humans have to choose between their own well-being and that of nature,nature will have to accommodate.

Humanity should accommodate only when its fate and that of nature are inseparably bound up.The sentimental environmentalists view saving nature as a totally wrong frame of mind,while a same and intelligible environmentalism does it not for nature’s sake but for our own.
