Home base for the dragons is a location undiscovered by the Vikings. Around the island, "there is heavy fog which blocks out the view of the stars and other cues of navigation, the sky is choked with dragons, and the coastal landscape is populated with creepy towers of rock that are disorienting. Thus, the Viking ships would generally get lost, get devoured by dragons, or crash into these rocks," explains Director Chris Sanders.

Dragon Island is composed of jagged, black, lava-formed structures that blend into its dark skies to create an eerily imposing and mysterious environment. Its volcanic presence has an infernal atmosphere "due to the common association between dragons and demons," explains Art Director Pierre-Oiivier Vincent. Earlier designs featured rock structures that suggested dragon shapes, but the production went away from these less realistic images in favor of a more intimidating and dramatic set for the dragons' lair.

IN EARLIER DEVELOPMENT concepts, there was one shared island, with dragons living on one side and Vikings on the other. "That's what inspired the Fire and Ice image," explains Art Director Pierre-Oliver Vincent, who took the traditional associations of an icy arctic Viking environment and a fiery dragon den and blended them into one intriguing land mass.
