I used to hate reading growing up.
Maybe it was because I was a very slow reader and understanding what I read didn’t come easily to me.
Maybe it was because I was swamped with a 110-page reading assignment no matter what day of the week.
Maybe it was because I hated the idea of group reading as an introvert (have one person read some of the passage aloud, move on to the next person, have them read some of it aloud, and so forth).

Reading allows us to expand our imagination.
It can help us bend our reality in ways we wouldn’t have thought possible.
Being close-minded and rigid in our thought processes is not something that will take us far.
Especially if our society wants to continue to innovate and disrupt from the norm.
When we read, specifically fiction based books, we keep our minds open because we can afford ambiguity.
Research
has confirmed this. It has shown that fiction readers arose as more flexible and adaptable than non-fiction readers when assessing cognitive closure.

READING MAY LENGTHEN YOUR LIFESPAN.
A team at Yale followed 3,635 adults over the age of 50 for 12 years.
They noticed that people who read books for 30 minutes a day lived nearly two years longer than those who read magazines or newspapers.
Adults who read more than 3.5 hours per week were 23 percent less likely to die, and adults who read less than 3.5 hours per week were 17 percent less likely to die.

Not only does regular reading help make you smarter, but it can actually increase your brain power.
Just as physical activity supports the heart, muscles, and bones, intellectual activity supports the brain.

I like to picture my brain growing, changing and making new neural connections and different patterns as I’m reading.

3. It rewires the brain and creates new white matter.
Want to improve communication within the brain? Just crack open a book, because according to researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, reading exercises —at least in children, according to the study — can alter brain tissue in positive ways.
In 2009, scientists Timothy Keller and Marcel Just uncovered evidence that intense reading improvement instructions in young children actually causes the brain to physically rewire itself. In doing so, the brain creates more white matter which improves communication within the brain. The results suggest that reading deficits in children can point to specific problems in the brain's circuits that can be treated and improved with reading.

Another side effect of this incredible brain workout, reading not only improves memory, but in increases attention spans, too. Because of the sequential narrative style of most books — a beginning, middle, and end — reading encourages the brain to think similarly in sequence, and thus spend more time on building a story rather than rushing through each detail.According to neuroscientist Susan Greenfield and her book Mind Change, the internet has improved users' capacity for short-term memory and ability to multi-task, but it can actually split our attention, unlike reading. When we read a novel, we read linearly, rather than sporadically jumping from tab to tab, and slowly think about the information in front of us. This exercise of taking time to process the narrative, to think about the complex layers of the story and how they fit together, actually increases the capacity for longer attention spans, especially in children.

Reading a lot has many effects, all of which are positive.
The first main effect is strengthening your vocabulary. For instance, if you are constantly hungry, you could say you have a large appetite, or you could tell people that your appetite is voracious. They both mean the same thing, but you might not understand the second one if you don’t read a lot of books.
